What Are Outdoor Area Rugs Made Of?

Unlike materials chosen for indoor comfort, an outdoor rug is typically made from synthetic fibers such as polypropylene. These materials resist fading from sun exposure, shed water rather than absorb it, and stand up to humidity without breaking down or growing mold.

Because these fibers are built to handle moisture and temperature swings, outdoor area rugs can be left in place through changing weather without the same upkeep that natural-fiber rugs require indoors. For softer, natural-fiber options meant for interior rooms, our indoor area rugs carry a different set of materials suited to that use.

Where Outdoor Rugs Work Best in the Charlotte Area

Patios, covered porches, decks, and poolside areas are common places to add an outdoor rug throughout the Charlotte metro. A rug in these spaces helps define a seating or dining area while giving bare feet a softer surface than concrete, wood, or pavers.

Sunrooms and screened-in porches are also a good fit, since these transitional spaces often see the same humidity and temperature swings as fully open-air areas. Outdoor patio rugs in these settings add color and texture while standing up to everyday exposure.

Benefits of Outdoor Area Rugs for Carolina Weather

Charlotte's humid summers, heavy rain, and strong sun make weather-resistant materials worth prioritizing. A rug built for outdoor use won't trap moisture the way an indoor rug would, which helps it resist mildew during the region's wetter months.

These rugs also tend to hold their color better under direct sun, so a large outdoor area rug placed on an uncovered patio can go a full season without noticeable fading. That durability makes outdoor rugs a practical long-term choice for Carolina backyards, decks, and entertaining spaces.

Care & Maintenance for Outdoor Rugs

Most outdoor rugs can be rinsed with a hose and left to air dry, and mild soap and water will handle everyday dirt or spills. Shaking out debris regularly and allowing rugs to dry fully before storing them helps prevent mildew between seasons.

Rotating a rug periodically also helps even out sun exposure and foot traffic, keeping color and texture consistent across the whole piece over time.
